Blitzkrieg is a real-time strategy game with three campaigns during World War 2. During the campaigns the player keeps its core army of tanks and guns. In the missions there are additionally units provided by the game, including infantry and air units. There is a description of all units in the game, even if the units cannot be commanded by the player. The three campaigns are:
* Allies (US, UK, French) fighting in Europe and Africa
* German fighting in Europe, Africa and Russia
* Soviet Union fighting in Russia and afterwards in Europe
The campaigns include historical battles like the battle of Kursk and optional bonus missions, which can be played to:
* Get experience for the profile of the player to increase the rank of the profile.
* Get experience for the units in the core army, so that the units become deadlier.
* Exchange weapons to newer types.
During a mission the losses are never replaced, losses in the core army are replaced after missions. All depots have unlimited resources. The game includes maps for multiplayer matches over LAN or the Internet.

Blitzkrieg is a real-time WW II tactical level game in the Close Combat style. You command your small group of combined arms troops in a single battle or campaign. The game holds hundreds of WW II units from the all-familiar German tanks to obscure trucks. On top of normal troops you can order air support in the form of bombers, fighters, ground attack planes, recon and paratroopers.
Successfully completing mission's gains you promotions and your troops improve their experience. On top of the standard movement and attack commands you can order your troops to dig in, lay mines, mount disbanded artillery pieces and so forth. The troops' movement can be altered by different formations and movement styles (crouching, aggressive, march columns etc

The second Add-On to Blitzkrieg has an 18-mission campaign with the American tank legend general George S. Patton.
Beside the campaign there are eight more single-player scenarios, new units (infantry and also vehicles), new buildings and an improved AI. The occupation of train stations, ports, tank factories and airports ensures constant supplies, meaning that there are reinforcements now.
The whole game is build on the graphic engine of the original Blitzkrieg game, only including new graphics for the new theatres of war like Australia-Guinea, Siberia, Spain or the snowy forests of the Ardennes.
